If you suffer from seasonal allergies, then you don’t need me to tell you just how awful it can be.
You probably teeter between constant sneezing, having a stuffy or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and just the thought of allergy season makes you miserable.
I’ve been there too.
I even experience asthma flare ups because of my allergies, which I didn’t know was possible until it happened to me.
So, like most people, I went to an allergy and asthma specialist to get help. My doctor gave me some over the counter remedies such as a nasal spray and taking Claritin daily and I went on my way for years.
I’m sure you’re probably going through a similar regimen yourself.
But, if you’re like me, you may not have felt much relief.
If you don’t take your meds like clockwork, your symptoms quickly resurface.
Not only that, and in my case, they seemed to be getting worse.
Sure, you could chalk it up to more pollen, another change in seasons, or whatever else could be to blame.
But at the end of the day, I was only getting worse, not better, and I was relying more and more on my inhaler and meds to get by.
As frustrating as this was, I didn’t set out to find a better solution. Instead, I trusted my doctor and continued to pay for overpriced over-the-counter meds that didn’t offer much relief.
That is, until I accidentally stumbled on the solution I’m about to share today.
I say accidentally because I was reading two books by the author Lyn-Genet on finding foods that react with your system — so nothing to do with allergies — and it was her recommendation that changed my life — literally.
Before I get to what I’m about to share, I want to preface this by saying I don’t get paid to share this product I use. And since I’m not a doctor, I can’t say for certain if you can use it without any interactions to what you’re currently taking. For that, you’d have to do some research of your own.
If you ask your doctor, they probably won’t know much about it — my regular doctor didn’t and I haven’t needed to go back to my allergy and asthma specialist since so I haven’t been able to ask them.
All I know is this solution has worked wonders for me. I no longer use my asthma inhalers or have a need to take a daily allergy med.
My sinuses are clearer than they’ve ever been and I can go outside without having to suffer with unwanted symptoms.
Okay, enough teasing, let’s get into what I’m talking about:
My Secret Weapon for Combatting Allergy Season and More: MSM
In Lyn Genet’s books, The Plan and The Metabolism Plan, she offers more information on what MSM is and how it can help.
The information I’m sharing is from a combination of what she presented in those books.
Let’s answer this question first:
What is MSM?
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, which is definitely a mouthful, so stay with me.
As Lyn points out, this is a natural form of sulfur.
And what it does is help reset your body’s histamine response.
Histamine overload is something I’ve personally dove into to try and heal a number of issues, allergies being one of them.
So this immediately piqued my interest.
Getting back to MSM, Lyn mentions in her book, The Metabolism Plan, that MSM is a building block of collagen, which means it can help with your hair, nails, and skin.
And that’s not all it’s connected to.
Lyn talks about how MSM works by strengthening your mucosa lining creating a natural barrier between you and allergens.
This is important because when an allergen like pollen gets into your system, it causes your body to go on the attack and raise its defenses.
You’ll see this in the form of unwanted symptoms and inflammation. It’s your body’s way of getting rid of what’s going on.
But, unfortunately, this method can lead to a build up of histamine, which is not a good thing.
High histamine can lead to a host of other negative symptoms like anxiety and depression, as Lyn points out.
She also goes on to say that this histamine overload stimulates your fight-or-flight response, a natural stress reaction, that leads to a cascade of other issues.
That’s why it’s beneficial to take MSM whether you’re fighting allergies or any of these other negative symptoms discussed next.
Who Can Benefit from Taking MSM?
In her book, Lyn says that the following conditions may be improved by taking MSM:
- Acid reflux
- Allergies
- Anxiety
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Candida (yeast overgrowth)
- Depression
- Inflammation
- Leaky gut
- Migraines
- Stress
- Wrinkles
- Weight loss
Crazy right?
She also talks about how, when MSM is combined with probiotics, it can help heal your gut lining.
This powerful duo (MSM + probiotics) can help restore good digestion, ease inflammation, and promote weight loss.
I found this useful for healing my IBS symptoms which, by the way, I haven’t had one flare up since using MSM.
Getting back to allergies, this is what Lyn recommends doing:
How to Take MSM for Seasonal Allergies
As suggested, I took MSM for six weeks.
She talks about it like taking a six-week regimen and then stopping.
If you flare back up, or you find yourself in the middle of another seasonal change, you can then start another six-week regimen.
Since I’ve done my first six-weeks on MSM, I haven’t had to use it again. My symptoms have literally disappeared and haven’t returned despite the fact that we’re in spring right now and pollen is all around us. It’s that good.
I love the fact that this isn’t something you need to rely on forever, because that’s how I felt my allergy meds were becoming.
Here’s the dosing that she recommends and what I followed to a T:
- If you weigh up to 180 pounds, take 3,000 mg per day
- If you weigh up to 240 pounds, take 4,000 mg per day
- If you weigh up to 300 pounds, take 5,000-6,000 mg per day
Looking at those figures, it may seem like a lot to take in, but the reality is it isn’t much.
For me being in the first category, it was equivalent to three supplement “pills” per day for six weeks since each capsule was 1,000 mg.
I set a reminder on my phone of when to end the six weeks and I made sure to take one pill with breakfast, lunch, and dinner just so I could stay on track.
This regimen has worked so well for me, I haven’t had to see my allergy specialist in over a year, which means I didn’t need to refill expensive inhalers, and I no longer need to replenish my Claritin and nasal spray, which are so damn expensive.
I also feel like my stomach and digestion have also improved (less bloat for starters).
And I’m no longer spending a fortune on medicines that only made matters worse.
I rarely have to use my neti pot too, which is something I relied on with my allergy meds.
This secret weapon has worked so well for me, I’ve put my husband Eric on it and shared it with his aunt and mom, friends of mine, and people online. It truly changed so much for me.
And that’s why I knew I wanted to share it with you. I’m not one who doesn’t share what works for me. I want you to get the same relief and results as me and I plan to share exactly how I did it so you can find relief too.
With this article, I can now share it with anyone willing to listen and you can share the link to anyone who may need it too.
More About MSM
In her other book, The Plan, Lyn also mentions that, by taking MSM and resetting your histamine intolerance, you may find that you react less to certain foods.
This is because it strengthens your mucosa lining and reduces inflammation. So what could have irritated you before may not because now your body is better protected to handle it.
Lyn talked about how MSM cured her allergies, sinus infections, and migraines all because it offers fortification from the inside out.
A few more points I want to mention from Lyn is that she feels that MSM strengthens the efficacy of probiotics and can help reduce a yeast overgrowth.
You’ll notice the latter if your tongue is coated in a thick white layer, as Lyn points out in her books.
Lastly, Lyn feels that you may find it easier to finally break through weight loss plateaus or weight loss struggles because MSM helps to reduce that inflammation that’s lurking under the surface.
She talked about how high histamine levels means your body is in a high inflamed state, so by getting those down, your body has a better chance of getting rid of excess weight.
I didn’t see those results personally but since I had so many other positive benefits, I’m not complaining one bit.
Final Thoughts on MSM
I know I’ve mentioned that MSM is my secret weapon for allergies but I do believe it can help in so many other areas, as mentioned in this guide.
That’s why I fully think more people should be on it.
It’s a natural supplement that’s available on Amazon and it’s beyond affordable, so it’s almost like why not give it a shot?
Before you do though, I would do a quick Google search to make sure there’s no interactions with any medications you’re taking.
You should technically ask your doctor but they may not be much help.
Mine said she didn’t know of it but that if it helped my breathing and allergy symptoms that much to keep taking it, which I did.
Fortunately, I was two-thirds of the way done with my six-week stint, so I only had a few weeks left to go.
Once I finished, I haven’t needed to take it since.
I will say that my husband Eric takes it more as needed which I don’t recommend.
Since you see results pretty quickly, he felt that there was no reason to keep going for six weeks.
But Lyn mentions it’s about detoxing and clearing out the excess so if you only take a small amount, you may not get rid of it properly which means it could linger for longer or resurface faster
I found the six week trial worth it and not inconvenient at all.
So if you find there’s no interactions, you may want to give the full effort of six weeks and regular dosing to see how you fare.
Of course, I’m not a doctor and can’t legally tell you what to do. All I’m sharing is what worked for me in the hopes that you might be able to find relief too.
Over to you now — do you think you’ll consider giving MSM a shot?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment below.
I’m also sharing the exact brand I found and used on Amazon, though you could get it almost anywhere at a natural supplement store. My first purchase was a small bottle at the Vitamin Shoppe to give it a shot.
Keep in mind, these links are not affiliate links and I don’t get paid to share it with you.
To getting rid of allergies and other unwanted symptoms once and for all,

What probiotic do you use with it?
I love Garden of Life probiotics and digestive enzymes. They’re a little pricier but it’s because they’re high quality. I’ve been on them for over a year and love them. Here’s a link for more info. I buy mine on Amazon but you can get them from a few places.
There’s a few different types so you can find the one you like using this link then head to Amazon to buy them cheaper. Any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks for the comment too!
